About Mikey

I’m with Wil Wheaton on this.  Let’s say I’m just a guy, y’know?

I’ll tell stories as they relate to the topics, but too much specific information would compromise my invisibility.  Even when the stories are from my own life, it’s still unavoidably me writing about a character based on me.  I can’t help that.  No one sees themselves objectively.

  1. If the intimacy of our relationship as readers and writer isn’t satisfying enough for you, the best way to get me to reveal myself (slightly) is by leaving an insightful comment. I read each one, and answer 99% of them. Since the comments require your email I can also answer highly personal questions off-blog if I choose to.

I have good reasons for anonymity, some of which I can’t tell you. You’ll have to trust me on it.

    • Mikey,
Anonymity is good sometimes, after all the WWW is a very big place with it’s fair share of people we want to protect ourselves and our loved ones from. I compare it in a funny way to nudism, you blog can be viewed as the “baring all your personal details in written form” some might be willing to “flash it all” on the internet but I think that being less revealing is a safer bet for most of us…and definitely for our kids.
You are “just a guy” .. well actually you are a thoughtful, insightful blogger… Write On! 🙂

    • It all sounds very cloak and dagger but I like that. Too much information can be distracting; like a guide dog in training I need to stay focused lol

    • Hello & very nice to met you & Finnegan. I’ve only read that one post and had several connections as I am a former poodle person from many moons ago and have loved the breed ever since for reasons which you surely know. I also have worked with people who are visually impaired or blind and am familiar with the joys and challenges of training service dogs, tho I’d never until now heard of a poodle being a service dog. Lastly, one of my first thoughts upon opening your blog was “wow, I really like the design. Nice and clean.” Having just changed my theme for the 4th or 5th time, this was on my mind… 😉 I’ll be following you!

      • I learned the hard way about themes. I began by using one that was black with white type. Some of my favorite early subscribers complained they couldn’t read it. I realized that most of the hype about themes is sales malarky. I looked for the simplest, most straightforward one I could find, one with a column for the articles, and a smaller column for the bells and whistles, which I try to use the least possible of. I do embed videos, photos and add hyperlinks if I think they are useful, but I believe my blog should primarily be written. The chief joy should come from reading it. Media should be secondary and illustrative. That said, I do sometimes post lists, galleries or all-media articles. I’m unconsciously biased toward magazine-style presentations, from a past working in the entertainment biz.

Finnegan is our first experience with a poodle mix of any kind. The appeal of the breed is obvious. He’s so responsive, without being oversensitive. Joyful, clever and a bit mischevious, but ultimately eager to please. I have high hopes for his success. Thanks for following!

        • well I’m an old journalist and understand that on a physical level, the eye is happy to read constrained columns of text but becomes irritated when that column width stretches beyond 4-5″. Multiple colors are also an irritant, and the brain runs into big problems when trying to absorb data visually if music or moving images are competing for attention. I learned that last nugget as an online professor.

I was present at the birth of my poodle, Happy, and her name is really more about the feelings she brought up in me, tho she was a frolicsome doggie. I am still unable to talk about her death. She was a sweetie.

          • I sympathize, and I’m truly sorry for your loss. It’s no easier to lose a pet than any other family member. It’s a good thing you had this relationship. Remember, and cherish it. Cry when you need to.

    • Thank you Invisible Mikey for your like on my post “Why the enemies of Obamacare oppose it!” I particularly appreciate it as it is the first like that I have gotten in quite a while. Thanks

  2. You write, “it’s still unavoidably me writing about a character based on me. I can’t help that. No one sees themselves objectively.” Well that’s the truth! Very profound and thought provoking.
    Theresa Jane

  3. Personally, I prefer the anonymity. It allows us both to exist in this space without any preconceived notions…there’s nothing worse then being a fore-gone conclusion. Even if it comes with a nice set of baby blues.
And besides, the fun is in the “getting to know you” puzzle. If I knew it all, right here, right now, what more would there be for me to discover?

  4. Hey, you! I’d like to send you a private e-mail, but I don’t know how to do that from here, so I’m being rather cryptic. I met you and your wife once in Kansas City. I was married to someone you know at the time, and I’d like to keep in touch for benign friendly reasons. If you’d drop me a line at revanniecherry@yahoo.com I can elaborate… Cheers to you, Annie
P.S. Feel free to burn this letter after reading (aka, delete.)

i read a few of your posts and and scrolled the rest also found and added to my blog list tt’s personnal blog i’ll be reading it , i had to change my blog from black with yellow writing because she found it hard to read at times it took weeks, anyway you have a good blog with lots of content 🙂 but 😦 i feel that on the main page the posts are far to long and you have to scroll for ever to get to the bottom one i think you should put the ” read more ” button in them all , i’m going to add your site to my blogroll if you would do the same for me please , harry

    • Your suggestion about the read more button is excellent, Harry. I’m definitely going to do that. I’m still deciding what to do about the Blogroll.

I don’t personally think it’s attractive to readers to list more than 10-15 other blogs, especially when they include mini-reviews as my list does. I’m seriously considering making mine smaller because I never scroll down a list that looks like everything on someone’s iPod. I read over 100 blogs occasionally, and am subscribed to about 30, but I think it looks ridiculous to display a list that long. On the other hand, I am a fair critic and I enjoy waving a flag from time to time when I discover good work by others.

What I will do for you is put in a plug for your fine site in the body of my Gift Basket series when I get to the one about DIY sites, planned for sometime next week. You’ll get a pingback when it’s posted. Congratulations on passing 25k!

  6. GO MIKEY…in general.

Thanks for the nod in your comment on Sandra Lee’s blog today. It gave me the chance to discover yours! I need to add you to my regular reads.

    • You’re most welcome, Bob. I wholeheartedly agree with the things you’ve shared about the learning process involved with retirement. My wife and I are entering that period right now, and we want our lives to be open and fulfilling now that they are less ordered around work schedules.

  8. Mikey–I didn’t see a way to email you, so I am leaving this response here and hoping you will see it. I am still chuckling over your props for my correct use of “apical.” I thought I would tell you the background of my affection for this word.

I was never a science ace, but I had to have a certain number of science credits in college. I took botany and astronomy, the two “easiest” courses available. The only thing that stayed with me from botany is “apical meristems.” This phrase is my favorite phrase and I try to use it, or a part of it, at every opportunity, although, as you can imagine, it is hard to work into the conversation very often. I just love the sound of it, and it is fun to say. It sounds “happy.”

Thank you for noticing. Maybe I can figure out how to write a whole post about apical meristems.

Feel free to delete this comment–it is not really relevant to your profile!

    • Well, it’s way more interesting than spam, and I leave some of those…
Apical (pertaining to the apex/tip of an item) is also used in biology, which is how I knew. When measuring pulse in adults we check the wrist (radial – proximate to the radius) or in emergencies, the neck (carotid). Infants are too squishy to check at the wrist. We put a stethoscope at the point of the chest corresponding to the tip of the heart. It’s called apical pulse. Also, when taking a chest x-ray we have to make sure the entire lung field is displayed, apical to costophrenic (top to bottom).

When logged in to WP, if someone leaves you a comment and you view it selecting Comments from within Dashboard or the Manage Comments command in the drop-downs under your My Blog menu, you will see that person’s email displayed.

I think your work is fabulous. I feel uneasy even writing this. My Father’s Imprisonment hit too close to home for me. I hope you have controlled Mr. Hyde. It shook me up so much, I couldn’t write it under the piece.
I guess that is what writing should do.
I feel a bit frightened, but will continue to read your non-transparent work.
    Jaye

    • Yeah, Hyde’s pretty much on a good leash. I still yell, but mostly at the lying politicians on TV, or at bad drivers when I’m alone in my own car. It’s relatively harmless behavior. As far as the material hitting close to home, I am sorry you were hurt. I think many more children, partners and spouses endure various kinds of abuse than anyone is comfortable admitting. But these awful things must be dealt with honestly, or they control and shape us. I want my engine to be my ability to offer compassion, not the pain making me avoid things.

  11. jgavinallan

    So sweet. Thank you

    Jaye

  12. So you are bearing your soul whilst managing to keep it to yourself? And it is possible to be personal without giving yourself away?
Looking forward to reading more, thank you.

    • You’re welcome, Patti. Those would be lovely, altruistic reasons 🙂
Partly I’m a bit obsessive about keeping my real and online lives separate, and partly I had a “past” in showbiz. I wanted to start fresh with an invented anonymous persona (based on me, but an improved version) free from old baggage. By the simple device of not using my full name, I have a mask that allows more confessional material. It’s also a joke (as in “How is not being seen, being seen more fully?”)

  13. I agree that it’s best to remain annonymous, although I’m sure a determined person could find me somehow. One of the email scammers that I wound up recently from my little-used anonymous Hotmail account managed to track me back to the original work email address that he sent the first scam email to, which links to our website containing our address. I thought it’d be lost in the millions that he sent, but clearly not.

Great site, by the way and good luck with retaining the cloak of invisability!

  14. I hate “Bugging” people but I’ve been coming to your blog alot recently since I discovered it and I have Featured a New Artist. I learned alot in doing so! If you delete this I’ll understand but I didn’t see a way to send you an email. 😦

    • No, prob, Laurie. I did edit your comment, but only to show you how to do these things, since I know you are new. I don’t, and you don’t want to advertise your email on your blog, or you will receive an avalanche of spam at some point. Marketers and scammers do not respect boundaries these days. You must protect yourself from those who are addicted to trying to sell you things you don’t need. They will pretend to be your friends, which they aren’t, and it’s just a nasty, ugly vortex of unwise materialism to be avoided.

The way I work it in this space is, if you are nice enough to comment, you get a free plug for your blog – once. I call them “gift baskets”, and here’s yours! —

Laurie Thomas is a wife and Mom who loves all kinds of music. She writes a regular feature to help introduce you to lesser-known artists she enjoys listening to. If you like discovering new music, drop by at: http://lauriethomas.wordpress.com

  15. I never really thought about the reason for the gauze and sunglasses disguise. I guess I thought it had something to do with nursing.Makes no sense I know, but in my mind….You really want to keep your identity hidden, huh? But, in posts, you have given enough info away that someone could probably figure it out, if they tried really hard. Must not be that big a deal anymore.

Anyway, this is the only way I could figure out to send you a message. Please give me you sister’s electronic contact info. If she is open to it, I would love to send her the chapter about my actually attempting suicide just to get some feedback if she is amenable to it. dbird1@triad.rr.com Thanks! Happy Friday to ya!

Your site and writing is fascinating. I’ll have to read here more often. I can learn a lot from you. Thanks!

    • Well, I’m happy to have you here, Jaco, but your ability to choose evocative imagery already exceeds mine. I will enjoy your story more when the parts are linked together. I’m kind of sorry I read some of the “flash fiction” parts. I like surprises!

(Here’s a different kind of plug. Jaco is letting readers see bits of his story BEFORE he’s finished with it. So, if you enjoy analysis of the writing process, you’ll like his work.
Unfortunately, he just moved to another hosting service, and left a link that doesn’t work yet. You can click on his name to go as far as I got.)

What I’m doing is to take nonlinear scenes in the same fashion film directors Alejandro González Iñárritu and Wong Kar Wai piece together their films, and bring them together as you said. i’m not a trained writer, in fact I don’t know if I can even call myself a writer. I’d like to be a writer. I know my offerings are very humble right now and lack much. Sorry for the old link in my profile name. I didn’t know/think if it would be appropriate to link to my current domain.

    Jaco

  18. Val

Despite my using my real name and posting some stuff about myself on my blog, there is a lot that I will never reveal about myself online.

Really, you have to do things that make you feel secure and which also – particularly when you’re a blogger – make you feel comfortable enough to write.

    • Mikey is my real name. If I did use my last name it would only confuse things, since I have the same last name as a much more famous person. Then I would have to answer every other comment with, “No, I’m not him.”

  19. I and also my pals have been reading the great solutions found on your web site and at once came up with an awful suspicion I never thanked the site owner for those techniques. The boys are already for this reason very interested to read them and already have in actuality been having fun with them. Thank you for indeed being simply kind as well as for making a decision on this form of amazing subjects most people are really eager to know about. Our honest apologies for not saying thanks to sooner.

    • Solutions? I’m not certain that is the word you meant to choose, but I guess I do offer some general recommendations. Anyway, you’re welcome, boys.

(This is from a sports-oriented blog in the Czech Republic. Not my usual readers, which made the comment interesting.)

  21. hey Mikey. im in the middle of a 12 day work week… wth right? Anyway, fighting fatigue, a suddenly inconsistent internet connection and some writers block thrown in for garnish. Anyway could I bug you to look at a draft for me when you have time, and how do you do that on here anyway?

Love your posts on theor guide puppy BTW lol. If you have any questions or training problems, Ive done more than my share of prepping service dogs.

    • I would be happy to look over your draft. I always have spare opinions lying around. I’ll give you one – FREE! I’m sending you an email, and you can attach it to your reply as a Word file, PDF or text (.txt).

We’re getting puppy #2 this coming Sunday! I appreciate your offer, but we have a terrific panel of experienced mentor-trainers backing us up right here. We must use their methods.

  22. Great to hear you’re not winging it with the pup! 🙂

Thanks for the help in advance. Just think you seem like a good sounding board and I think this one post going to be more important than I thought when concieved

I enjoyed the experience, and thanks for passing it on again!

  25. I didn’t realize until I saw the above, you’ve been nominated for something.

I annoint you Versatile Blogger Award. You share the podium with others here: http://cyclewriteblog.wordpress.com/my-award-picks/

(Yea, it’s alot of work to follow the instructions!) 🙂

  26. Nem

Wow what an interesting space/blog/place! love the pictures. Your a very interesting person and I’m definitely gonna follow you. As for never revealing to much about yourself….I always thought that unless you walk a mile with them….You never really know them.
    Happy hugs your way.x.

  27. Hi Mikey, thanks for stopping by my blogs and for taking the time to leave likes, they are appreciated..you have a cool site going on here, certainly worth a follow, cheers Mark 🙂

    • Thanks, Mark. Glad you enjoyed it. I wish I could have left you a comment also, but for some reason my computer and the current version of WP are not entirely compatible. (For example, it classified your comment as “spam” for no reason.) “Likes” is all I can leave at most other sites. The photography on your site is exraordinary.

  28. I have nominated you for the Inspiring Blog Award. For more information, click here: http://reflectionsofchina.wordpress.com/2012/06/08/inspiring-blog-award/
Should you wish to accept this award, please copy and paste the award icon onto your blog, tell us seven things about yourself, and share with us, some of the blogs that you like. Best regards. Mark

  29. Aptly suited words from a rapt mind in an apropos venue of mystery and intrigue.

Pleasant surprise to stumble upon you.

    Dig it.

    • Thanks very much, Brandy. Glad you dug it.

(Brandy Collins is a new blogger, who writes poetically, romantically, emotionally and evocatively – with symbolic illustrations. She’s a bit mysterious, but as fans of this site know, that’s part of the fun: http://thoughlifebeaday.wordpress.com/ )

      • You know what’s even cooler than a perfectly spontaneous compliment from a perfectly unacquainted individual who caught a glimpse of your perfectly fragmented soul and liked it? …A full-on, unabashed, unsolicited plug from a brilliantly captivating & captivatingly brilliant kindred spirit, without hesitation rushing forth to share their worked with you. My ego is thoroughly stroked. Right on, high five, and totally good to know you.

Once I evolve from this lowly post of village idiot and discover how to effectively build my blog in a way that promotes other awesome-filled blogs, rest assured you will be front and center. I like your intention, I enjoy your brainwaves, and I look forward to reading more from you. Anticipation. Mega-tons of it.

  30. You ask for something to be left that is insightful…….Here is the best I can do:
    1. It’s better to spend your dying years living than your living years dying.
    2. Love is when two people want health and happiness for their partner more than they want it for themselves.
    3. I start every morning smiling in the mirror, I smile because I know I will only have to look at my mug for a few short minutes and I know my co-workers have to look at it all day.

Ok, I’m worn out. Was I insightful?

  31. Hi. I found your blog from a comment you left on a FP post – re, genetics and stuffs .. this one -http://epsilon4.wordpress.com/2013/01/15/tabula-rasa/ Anyway, I found it real interesting … ergh, this is awkward, but, care to write a post on it? Or, if you’d be interested, write something up and send it through for a guest post, or something like that? Let me know. You write well, and I’d love to share your story.

  32. You’re an excellent writer. Thanks for your posts!

  33. Hi Mikey,
I’ve decided to follow any WordPress members who commented on or liked my past posts, in an effort to be more community minded. Don’t feel compelled to hit me back, but if you do I hope you enjoy and say hi.

  34. Thanks for dropping by and “liking” my post re identity. Gonna try to continue with identity theme, at least periodically, but my attention span takes me elsewhere so often!

  35. hi
Thanks for dropping by , just got confused . You didnt like my post on Adolf Hitler ?

  36. With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?

My site has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any methods to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d certainly appreciate it.

    • I’ve avoided the piracy issue by doing this for free, and not caring if others steal my content. It’s so easy to rip off digital content I don’t know how anyone manages to protect theirs – except by being so original audiences recognize your work. Hard copy (printed), and filmed material is easier to protect, but there are always those in other countries where copyright protections don’t exist who will steal it anyway.

  37. Greetings from Kingston, Jamaica! It’s nice to have a visit from the Invisible Man on my blog. Do come again soon!

  38. The very first comment on your “About” screen is from yourself.

That alone says a great deal about who “Invisible Mickey” is. 😉

  39. I’ve just moved my blog here from Blogger and the guide said finding people with similar interests and commenting on their blogs was a great way to get readers, so here I am.

  40. I’m not sure why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a problem on my end? I’ll check back later and see if
    the problem still exists.

  41. Hi it’s me, I am also visiting this site regularly, this website is actually pleasant and the people are actually sharing good thoughts.

  42. Hey there this is kinda of off topic but I was wanting
to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you
have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding expertise so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience.
Any help would be enormously appreciated!

    • Here on WordPress it’s not completely WYSIWYG. There is an Edit page, but it’s still necessary to check each post after publishing, to see how the text formats visually. I often add or delete a few words after doing that.

  43. I appreciate that too!

  44. I visited various blogs but the audio feature for audio songs
existing at this web site is really superb.

  45. What’s up, I read your new stuff like every week. Your
writing style is witty, keep doing what you’re doing!

  46. Genie

I think your Gravatar pic is fun. And it’s true what you say: “No one sees themselves objectively.”

    • I’m complemented you understand the joke. Even when we look at ourselves in a mirror, we don’t see what a camera would. So I don’t hesitate to re-write and/or edit the facts if it makes the re-telling more interesting. Thank you for visiting to read!

  47. Great blog right here! Also your web site rather a lot up fast!
What host are you the usage of? Can I get your associate
hyperlink for your host? I want my web site loaded up as fast as yours lol

  48. Matt Stewart

I came across your blog through a comment you made on another one. It seemed intelligent, and since there isn’t too much of that going around these days, I followed to here. I am quite glad I did. I read your latest two posts, and they were both excellent in writing and information.

    Looking forward to reading more.

  49. Excellent bio! I can’t wait to follow along and read more. Question, do you happen to have an invisibility cloak? That would come in very handy I think.

    • Everyone’s invisibility cloak is a built-in. See, I can see the features of your face, and enjoy your awesome photgraphy, but I still don’t know you, so you remain “invisible”. Then there’s that conundrum I use as a motto – that no one can see themselves objectively. We’re always cropping and processing and altering the color pallette. So we remain invisible even to ourselves! Deep, huh? Congrats on your well-deserved Free Pressing!

  50. Hmm it looks like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any tips and hints for inexperienced blog writers?
    I’d definitely appreciate it.

  51. Hi Mikey,
Thank-you for dropping by my blog site. I too have perused yours and find your articles quite interesting. I love your avatar.
I agree that people do fail to see themselves objectively, however life seems to have the means to present them with hints to the extent their opinion of themselves is out of sync with reality.
I will be sure to drop by your blog, currently I have a response to one of your blogs in the works.

    • Thank you, Suzanne. I’ll happily meet you there, wherever “there” is.

I agree with you about being able to sense that we exist apart from objective reality. I think it might have a self-preservative purpose, something about an inhibition toward acting on our worst impulses because we can’t clearly see the extent of our destructive capacities.

  52. Stumbled upon your blog by chance and from what I have seen like the way you think. Look forward to following you and making the occasional comment if I can add anything constructive.

    • You’re welcome any time, “Al”! I do this for fun, for free and for practice, and I don’t do any promotion aside from commenting on other blogs. Every one who reads here came by chance or via keyword searches. That keeps everything neighborly and manageable. I prefer to play a long game.

  53. Totally agree that no one sees themselves objectively. Actually, I’m a little skeptical about the very idea of objectivity except in very well-defined circumstances.

The universe we live in is mostly an intersubjective one, is what I think.

  54. I have to confess – I love a person who challenges me to be insightful. I look forward to reading more from you and trust that one of these days you’ll inspire me to be brilliant. Lol

  55. Wow lot of good stuff on here Mikey!
I’ve got some of those ‘Bad’ movies, I used to collect
all that type of stuff, Rat Fink, Plan 9, etc. (on video tape)
Love the Bonzo’s, Dudley Moore too.

  56. No probs, I’ll stop by again soon and have another mooch.

  57. Wanted to let you know that I just deleted all my FireFox bookmarks except for yours. Please forward me my emails when you get a minute. =D

    • You have a terrific sense of humor! I would send the emails, but I have them on a personal server at the family compound and wouldn’t think of sharing it without a subpoena. BTW, my family compound is HIO4 (periodic acid).

  58. Those eyes look awfully familiarly Mikey. Do I know you?
I promise to keep your secret… 🙂 Thanks for the like!

  59. Ah, meant familiar.

    • I have one of those faces people “recognize” on sight. I’ve no concrete idea why, but this unrequested ability to appear generic (“Don’t I know you?”) adds to the invisibility.

  60. I enjoyed visiting your Blog! I’m currently following your site. When you get a moment, please support my site with a LIKE and/or FOLLOW as well.

  63. Thanks for finding my blog and commenting. Hope to ‘see’ more of you, or should that be ‘hear’ more from you, or ‘think’ more of you…or whatever!

  64. Hi! Mikey.

Hello! how are you sir? I really like your About me page and you seem like a cool and down to earth person.

Say, I got a curious question. Do you know who CocaineCows are? These guys followed my page and I got curious to seeing what they are all about. Ended up finding out these guys are not my cup or tea. Did they follow you too? What’s their deal?

    • Thanks for the compliment, CharlieZ. No, I don’t know who they are, and I don’t expend much energy trying to figure out people I haven’t met in person. I wrote a comment at that site, and I perceive them to be someone who’s into fairly weird humor. But I could be wrong.

For the most part, I never look at who is or isn’t following me, or try to figure out why. I write on this blog for free and for fun, and lately I’m writing a book, so I have little time to blog. Some readers get pleasure from my writing too, or the works of others I choose to re-blog, and it’s nice that they let me know. I appreciate that kind of distant, respectful relationship between writers and readers very much, and try hard not to abuse the privilege of borrowing their time.

      • It’s all good. I was just curious that’s all. I’m a very cautious person when it comes to people like that. Cocainecows recently posted a picture of his privates well how he referenced his ball-sack. I have not followed them nor I don’t want to. I’m just observing behind and seeing what they are about.

I will start to follow your page. Thank you for taking the time and writing to me. 🙂

    INTJ mummy?

  67. Hi Invisible Mikey, your blog caught my eye, like your invisibility. I am secret too – it doesn’t muddy the waters! 🙂 Look forward to reading your posts.
